School and Library programs
customized for each age group
For
my presentation I prepare by placing around the room many visuals - large
original paintings placed alongside corresponding books, book dummies,
props and my painting materials. When the children enter I introduce
myself and tell them briefly about my craft as a children's book
illustrator. I like to begin with a bang by standing up on a chair and
unfolding a 5 foot by 8 foot press sheet. That is an entire children's
book on one uncut piece of paper before it is folded, bound and cut. I try
to hold their interest with visual aids as I demonstrate the steps
involved in illustrating and printing books. I show children the
manuscript, a storyboard, reference photos, my sketches and dummy and then
the printed book. I will read one my books and
invite the children to ask questions and share their ideas. If time
allows, I will draw for the children and have them guess what it is as I
go along.
